About the memorial: A freestanding market cross, constructed from Doddington Quarry Freestone. The memorial base and shaft are approximately 30 metres in height and are surmounted by the burgh crest, The Flying Spur, which is made of bronze. It stands on the site of the old Market Cross. The Memorial was built in 1920 and dedicated in November 1920. It originally bore the names of 7 officers and 70 NCOs and men who gave their lives in the Great War.
