In most loving memory of my husband Col Sir Gerald Henry Summers KCMG, Governor of Somaliland who after serving with the Royal Sussex Regt. and the XXVI Cavalry Indian Army went in 1912 to Somaliland and in 1913 he was promoted Brevet Major for conspicuous gallantry in the action of Dulmadoba where he was thrice wounded. From 1916 to 1920 he commanded the troops and under his leadership the mad mullah was finally overthrown. He was appointed Governor in 1922 and during his administration the country at last enjoyed peace and prosperity. He died on November 29th 1925 from the effects of his wounds received in 1913. 'Justum et tenacem propositi virum Non civium ardor prava juentium Non vultus instantis tyranni Mente quatit solida.' [Translation by eudict.com - not the rage of the citizens commanding wrongful measures, not the aspect of the threatening tyrant, can shake from his firm purpose the person who is just and resolute (Horace)]
