About the memorial: Square-based column with inset polished pink granite plaques carrying inset lead lettering, framed by pink granite blocks with decorative part-rusticated finishes. Dates 1914 and 1919 carved in relief into one of these blocks on the front elevation. Simple pink granite capital. Topped by grey granite neo-classical statue of a grieving widow holding a wreath. Tapered pedestal formed of roughly-finished grey granite blocks with thick cement joints. Modern metal grille installed at the foot of the pedestal as mount for commemorative wreaths. Memorial stands within gravel enclosure bounded by a low sandstone wall with inset cast iron railings; based on marks in stonework these railings are not original. Gravel perimeter path between outer edge of sandstone wall and flagstone kerbs, surrounded by a planted border. Memorial accessed from road by series of sandstone steps surrounded by granite boulder rockery. Two large wooden planter tubs sit on steps. Monument: Base of column built of large rusticated grey granite blocks, with thick cement joints. Central portion of column built of rusticated grey granite with inset pink granite plaques containing names (lettering inlaid with lead). Simple grey granite capital. Statue depicts a grieving widow with a wreath in a classical style. Modern metal grille installed at the base as mount for commemorative wreaths. Walled enclosure: Low sandstone wall with inset cast iron railings. Wall shows evidence of having previously hosted a different set of railings. The area within the enclosure is surfaced with gravel. Perimeter path and access path: Perimeter path formed of gravel approx. 1.5m wide, contained within sandstone kerb, surrounding the walled enclosure. Surrounded by small planted border. Access steps formed of sandstone flags, flanked by granite boulder rockery and two wooden planter tubs.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.
