About the memorial: A rectangular greeny/blue glass pillar (which glows blue at night) standing in a pool of water. This stands next to an old airshaft, covered in ivy, with one side cleared to include a Book of Remembrance set in a glass fronted alcove in a black granite panel. The book contains names of all policemen & women killed in line of duty including those in all the various wars through history.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Westminster Walk: This memorial holds a Roll of Honour of those policeman killed in the course of an arrest or as a result of criminal acts rather than all of the 4000 officers killed in the line of duty. It includes the names of RUC officers killed in the Northern Ireland troubles. The first recorded constable killed was in 1680. It is recorded on the National Inventory as a War Memorial. The film director Michael Winner set up the Police Memorial Trust following the killing of PC Yvonne Fletcher in 1984. The memorial is made up of two separate components, a black rectangular enclosure covered in creepers, which houses a Book of Remembrance, and a glass column set in a reflecting pool. The former hides a London Underground air vent. The latter is lit by a blue light to represent the blue lamp which used to be put outside a police station and regarded as a symbol of the police and their readiness to serve. It is made up of 622 stacked sheets of glass and weighs 28 tonnes. It won the Royal Institute of British Architects award in 2006. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Route: Continue to Horse Guards Parade and immediately turn L into it to find Royal Naval Division fountain on LHS -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------.
