About the memorial: Figure surmounting tall plinth, surrounded by wall. One plaque on the plinth and two on the surrounding wall. Category B.Listed 30 March 1992. Historic Scotland Building ID 19059. OS Grid Coordinates 341175,669241. Unusual design among War Memorials of East Lothian. Part of retaining wall to Cockburn Halls, formerly The Miners Welfare Institute. Finandra Bose (sculptor) was an Indian sculptor (d1926) who trained with Percy Portsmouth and Rodin, and worked with Lorimer at St John's Church Perth, Scotland.

THE MINING VILLAGE 
WELFARE WORK IN THE LOTHIAN S 
LORD LINLITHGOW UNVEILS ORMISTON WAR MEMORIAL . 
The Marquis of Linlithgow on Saturday afternoon (13 September 1924) unveiled the Ormiston War Memorial , and thereafter formally declared open the Welfare and Memorial Institute . The war memorial is in front of the Institute , and recessed from the boundary wall . It takes the form of a polished  stone shaft with curved capital . The shaft is relieved with stone bands . On these are inscribe  the names of battles more closely associated with those of the parish who fell in the Great War . The base of the memorial bears in front a bronze  tablet , on which is inscribed— "In honour and everlasting memory of the men of the parish of Ormiston who gave their lives in the Great War , 1914-1919 . " 
There are 41 names on the tablet.  A bronze figure surmounts the shaft, representing " The Sacrifice of Youth" the work of Mr Fanindra Bose . The figure has been modelled with outstretched arms, presenting an attitude of crucifixion. The architect for the memorial and Institute was Mr J.A . Carfrae, 3 Queen Street, Edinburgh. 
The Institute occupies a site, presented by Lord Linlithgow, at the west end of the village. The building consists of a billiard room, a reading room, with adjoining space for a library , and a room for games .
 Mr John  Clark , chairman and managing director of the Ormiston Coal Company , presided at the 
war memorial unveiling ceremony . The Marquis of Linlithgow was accompanied by the  Marchioness , and the  members  of the village community were present  in large  numbers . A party of ex-Service men were on parade, under Lieut. R . L . Clark . 
Lord-Linlithgow , in unveiling the memorial said it was a local memorial , but it was touched  by the spirit of local patriotism , a spirit which made the joy of one home the joy of all and a spirit which made the sorrow of a neighbour a dark shadow across the sky of every family in the village . It was, therefore, appropriate that they should think that day of  the great struggle through which our country passed from the point  of  view  of the village and community . The memorial reminded them of service and of sacrifice. Let them hope that those who were to come would hold fast to the great tradition so nobly upheld by those to whoso memory it was raised. The names of the fallen , were read by Mr J.  Hyde, hon . secretary of the War Memorial Committee.
The dedicatory prayer was offered by the newly appointed minister of the parish , the Rev . William V. Whitehead, at present minister of Laws.  A lament was played on the pipes, and buglers sounded the “Last Post . " . A number of beautiful wreaths were placed at the base of the memorial . Including one  by Mr Clark as Chairman of the Memorial Committee , and one by the youngest ex-Service man . (The Scotsman - Monday 15 September 1924)
