1914 (Victoria Cross) 1918/ HAROLD JOHN COLLEY V.C. M.M./ SERGEANT, 10TH BN. THE LANCASHIRE FUSILIERS/ ON 25 AUG. 1918, AT MARTINPUICH, FRANCE, DURING A STRONG COUNTER-ATTACK , SERGEANT COLLEY'S COMPANY WAS HOLDING/ AN ADVANCE POSITION WITH ORDERS TO HOLD ON AT ALL COSTS./ SERGEANT COLLEY WENT WITHOUT ORDERS TO HELP TWO/ FORWARD PLATOONS. HE RALLIED THE MEN AND FORMED A/ DEFENSIVE FLANK AND HELD IT. HE WAS MORTALLY WOUNDED/ BUT IT WAS ENTIRELY DUE TO HIS ACTION THE ENEMY WAS/ PREVENTED FROM BREAKING THROUGH.
