About the memorial: St George's War Memorial Church was built in 1925. It was the idea of Rev George Kendall OBE who was a Senior Army Chaplain in WW1. He was posted to the 53rd (Welsh) Division in 1922 and lived amongst the miners in the Ely Valley until 1926. After his service in the WW1 he wanted to build a war memorial. St George's was built with generous donations from the local community, including the land and stone. The opening ceremony was a huge event. With a mile long parade. The Mayor of Cardiff and the assistant chaplain General to the Forces attended amongst many other dignitaries. The Church was very well attended and used by the community up until the 1960,s when numbers fell and it was eventually sold to the council. In error its status as a WW1 Memorial was lost. St George's has significance as it was the only War Memorial Church built in Glamorgan. It was also named the 'Church of the Lamp'- The sermon at the opening was from the text 'What mean ye by these stones?' On the 90th Anniversary of the Church's opening, and as the chosen location for the Armed Forces Day service for Tonyrefail in 2015, the Memorial was re-ordained as a War Memorial. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, accepting its previous incarnations error in abandoning the memorial and showing their current respect for WW Memorials, arranged for the faded and cracked memorial stone laid by Rev Kendall to be replaced by a new stone. The service was attended by Rev Kendall's son David and his grandson Tim Kendall.
