Status: On original site
Type: Freestanding
Location: External
Setting: Roadside
Description: Wheel cross
Materials:
  • Stone Granite
Lettering: Incised
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
  • Second World War (1939-1945)
About the memorial: Standing on the corner of a street junction, enclosed by posts and chains to the front, and a low, granite block wall to the rear. Only the cross is mentioned in IWM. It is clear from comparing the 1990s photographs with the more recent ones that significant restoration has taken place. A polished grey granite wheel cross, the cross decorated with celtic designs, standing upon a pyramidal plinth, upon a two-tiered square base. The main memorial shows the general commemoration on the front face, and commemorates the names of 71 Llangollen men who died in WW1 on one side and the rear face, whilst on the last face commemorates the men from the parish of Llantysilio, 12 of whom died in WW1 and 3 in WW2. Adjacent to the cross, against the wall is a smaller, square monument commemorating 29 men from Llangollen who fell in WW2. All the lettering is incised in gold letters and the names are arranged in surname alphabetical order, listing full first names, sometimes initials, and surname. Around the base of the plinth are epitaphs in Welsh and English
