About the memorial: The war memorial, a wooden board is inscribed with the names of 27 men and women of the congregation who were killed in World War One. The WWI Memorial painted by Charles H Thompson RA (1870-1946), brother-in-law of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, the well-known Whitby Victorian photographer.is in the form of a triptych with the names of those who died engraved in bronze underneath the painting on the wooden frame. Originally a triptych consisted of a central picture with a panel either side which could be folded over the central picture thus allowing it to be carried from place to place. However very soon triptychs became fixed in a frame, though it was not until the 19th century that non-religious paintings were adapted to this shape. Here the painting in the centre shows Christ on the cross, foot soldiers, some Cavalry soldiers and the Royal Flying Corp, many looking toward him. It is open to interpretation as to why the top half of the cross is not in the painting. It has been suggested that maybe the soldiers are seeing in their minds the upward journey to Heaven someone who died of their sins of the world as they respond to the dramatic local events and prepare to die for their country. The left side shows sailors and officers of the Royal Navy. A wounded or dying naked sailor covered in a red blanket/ensign is receiving treatment. In the background is a large Royal Navy white ensign flag. On the right side the Red Cross nurses are tending the injured. In the background are some civilians in front of a bombed building. Most War Memorials are in the memory of the dead. The triptych in its wide description of those in the armed forces and civilians shows how war affects all and not only the dead and wounded should be remembered. We are invited to remember also all those who lived and suffered through this dreadful time.
