About the memorial: The memorial is a stone-built cross at the crossroads on The Avenue - the main (unclassified) road south from the village. It is some way from any other buildings and looks down to the village. It is a Celtic cross in rough granite, with a sword (in the same stone) with its blade running down the cross, its hilt and pommels terminating in trefoils. The inscription is on the bottom 2 steps of the cross base and there is an additional plaque set on the ground in front of the cross with additions for 1939 - 45 and for men from the nearby Stonegrave.

Frederick William Whitney. Stoker 1st Class SS/111525, Royal Navy. HMS Hampshire (Armoured Cruiser, sunk by mine laid by German submarine U-75). Killed in action 5th June 1916. Son of Thomas and Isabella Whitney (nee Stockdale). Born 7th May 1891 (as naval record, birth actually recorded 1890) Nunnington and enlisted 24th November 1911. Commemorated Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
ESSEX	Ivan	Royal Engineers.
Corporal 54426. Guards Division Signal Company, Royal Engineers Died 20 Casualty Clearing Station 25th September 1915 of injuries received while riding motor cycle which collided with ‘Staff Car’. Only son of John and Annie Elizabeth Essex (nee Brammall) of School House, Nunnington. Born 1892 Nunnington and enlisted 3rd March 1915 Malton. Commemorated Longuenesse (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery. II.A.34.
HARRISON	George	Northumberland Fusiliers.
Private 50297. 27th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. Died 26th April 1917. Parentage unknown. Husband of Mary E Harrison (nee Jones). Born 1893 Nunnington and enlisted Sheffield. Commemorated Arras Memorial. Bay 2 and 3.
Note: described as ‘Nephew’ of Christopher Harrison and his sister Alice Harrison (as 1901).

Joseph Henry Wray. Private TR/5/160660. 51st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. Died Catterick 14th November 1918. Son of William and Sarah A Wray (nee Bell). Born 1900 Nunnington. Commemorated Hipswell (St John) Churchyard.

Harry Robert Whitney. Private 39646. 8th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment. Killed in action 9th October 1917. Son of Thomas and Isabella Whitney (nee Stockdale). Husband of Charlotte Emily Whitney (nee Rhodes) of Grassthorpe, NTT. Born 1887 Nunnington and enlisted Barnsley. Commemorated Tyne Cot Memorial. Panel 42 to 47.

Appears to be non military related death, no John Essex identified as casualty.
Possibly John Essex (village schoolmaster) the father of Ivan Essex. Born 1859 Rothwell, NTH and died 11th February 1917. Commemorated Nunnington Churchyard.
