About the memorial: The name (Earlestown) has been added to the title of this memorial as it appears to be the original name and was used for a duplicate entry.) The Committee, for the purpose raising subscriptions for the relief of widows, orphans, and dependents of those volunteers who were serving and might serve in the War, was appointed in November, 1899, and consisted of the members of the Council and representatives of the various Works in the district. The appeal was very liberally responded to, £991 18s 9d being subscribed, a large proportion of which was received from working men. Out of this amount £215 15s 11d was paid in relief—all applications being dealt with by a Committee specially appointed to enquire into and deal with each case. As regards the application of the balance of the fund, the subscribers were asked how they would like the proportions of their unexpended subscriptions devoting. The Committee suggested that a sum of £300 should be spent on a Memorial, and left the question of the allocation of the balance to certain Societies and to the subscribers. After the replies were received it was found that sufficient money would be available to erect a Memorial, designs for which were invited by advertisement, and that sent in by Messrs. Dring and Manchester (Architects), of Earlestown, was accepted. The work of erecting the Memorial was entrusted to Messrs. Stott and Prescott, of St. Helens, the whole cost of its erection, including the fencing, etc., being £336 12s 6d, and the Architects’ fees, cost of advertising, and of the unveiling, amounting to £72 4s 3d. The Memorial itself consists of the figure of a Yeoman (in white marble) standing on a base of various granites. On the panels are lettered the names of those men from Newton-in-Makerfield who volunteered and served in the War. The Unveiling Ceremony was on 29th April, 1905 at 4:30 The local Squad of Yeomanry, and the two Companies of Volunteers, with their Bands, were in attendance. 1. Hymn. 2. Prayer. 3. The Chairman of the War Fund Committee (Mr Borron) asked the Rt. Hon. Lord Newton to unveil the Memorial. 4. Unveiling. 5. The massed Bands played the National Anthem. 6. Mr Borron handed over the Memorial to the Chairman of the Council (Mr Ormand). 7. Mr Ormand replied. 8. Buglers sounded the “Last Post.” Visitors then had Tea in the Town Hall. The Yeomanry and Volunteers marched to the Viaduct Institute for refreshments. Some time in the late 1950's or early 1960's two additional wings were added to the monument with WWI on the left and WWII on the right. The Town Hall is Opposite the Police Station by the mini-roundabout north of the Market Square
