About the memorial: Stone cross on block stone plinth. Names engraved on stone plaques. Burham War memorial is sited on the corner of Church Street and Rochester Rd, Burham, within a gated garden. It is 5ft x 15ft tall approx. The monument consists of a small cross surmounting a square block column, plinth and two stepped base. It is set to a small area of paving slabs within the gardens. It has engraved plaques inset or mounted to the face of the monument. The gardens also has a flag pole which was erected in June 2012. An Annual Meeting of Electors book advises in July 1919 " The committee to ask Mr Henry Peters to give the piece of land adjoining the Church to erect a memorial in the shape of a cross and tablet. Voting was as follows: 14 for, 8 against". From the same source dated March 1920 it states "The Chairman reported that Mr H Peters had promised to present the land in front of the Church to the Council for a permenant war memorial and the war memorial was under consideration and would be started as early as possible. March 1921 " The Chairman reported that the Deed of Gift of land presented to the Parish Council by Henry Peters Esq as a site for a war memorial had been completed and was in the possession of the Council" From the minute book dated Spring 1920 " A discussion took place with the erection of a war memorial and the Clerk was directed write to Witcombe, Vaughan & Langridge asking for estimate for making and erecting of same. The designer of the war memorial was Mr Fredrick Burren, Bell Lane, Burham The Clerk reported that he had received a letter from Landridge receiving his estimate for making and erecting a war memorial to the cost of £145, a reduction of £7.00 after a previous letter was written requesting a reduction. Associated Portland cement Mfers contributed £25 towards the cost of a reinforced concrete cross, which the Council accepted, together with the names of the fallen on a tablet. R Langridge, Ham Hill, Snodland was employed to lay the pathways and erect the fencing. The fencing costs were £82.00" On 23 October 1921, the unveiling of the war memorial took place by H Peters Esq assisted by A Day. This was taken from a copy of the original order of service. On Sunday 30th January 1949 a Service of Unvieling and dedication of two new tablets took place commemorating those who fell in the second war war 1939-1945. Letters were written to local residents and businesses requesting a donation/sponsor funding. The Royal West Kent regiment were in attendance. From the minute book in 1949. 100 years later on 23rd October 2021, an event took place to commemorate the 100th Centenary which shadowed the original service as closely as possible. Two new plaques were unvieled, one with names of fallen that were not originally listed and the other commemorating the event. The event was very well attended by all age groups. The local school children laid individual poppies on wooden crosses. Each cross had an individual name of a fallen person engraved on it. The memorial is located next to the site of the former St Mary's (new) church demolished in the early 1980s, built by E W Stephens, Maidstone architect. A crazy-paving ragstone exterior gave way to a studied 13th century style interior. Not built on good foundations, there were structural problems.
