About the memorial: A beautiful, specially designed chapel as a memorial to the Harmsworth family and to the staff of Associated Newspapers who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. It has some contemporary glass panels at each end of the chapel containing inscriptions & names. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- City of London West Walk: St Bride’s takes its name from an Irish Saint St Bridget and suffered destruction in the Great Fire of London and the Second World War. In 1500 an associate of William Caxton (the inventor of the printing press) brought the first moveable type printing press to the church courtyard. It was used, amongst other things, to print religious books. Other churches began to do the same thing and so Fleet Street became the centre of the printing industry. St Bride’s thus became known as the “Printers Church” or the “Journalists Church”. Lord Rothermere was a powerful figure in the Newspaper world and he headed a campaign to help improve this church which includes this elegant memorial to his staff. Note the etchings on the glass panels of items associated with the newspaper business ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Route:
