About the memorial: Small plaque with white lettering. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- City of London West Walk: There are 3 other memorials in this Journalist’s Church The Overseas Press Club of America has a small plaque. It was founded in 1939 by a group of foreign correspondents. Its objective was to encourage the highest standards of reporting and integrity, to educate new journalists, to promote the independence of reporters and strive for better understanding among people. The Illustrated London News was the world's first illustrated weekly newspaper; the first issue appeared on Saturday 14 May 1842. It was published weekly until 1971 and then increasingly less frequently until publication ceased in 2003. The Daily Sketch was a tabloid newspaper founded in Manchester in 1909 and part of this group of newspapers. Another plaque remembers their staff who died. Note the trade of the person remembered is also shown. In the basement there is a plaque and book of remembrance to Evening Standard employees who died. As well as employees who fought in the war these publications would have told the news with pictures and its camera men (and reporters) would be involved in obtaining pictures from war torn areas of Britain and elsewhere particularly in World War II. Without the pictures (before television) the general public would have no visual awareness of what was happening and the images have provided a powerful historical record of events for future generations to study and comprehend the devastation of twentieth century war. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Route:
