About the memorial: St John the Evangelist Church Carlinghow is situated on Ealand Road off Bradford Road in close proximity to Wilton Park Batley. There are two Memorials inside St John’s Church Carlinghow which lists the names of members from Carlinghow Working Men’s Club when the Memorial was transferred following the closure of the Club in 2004. Description – a large wooden plaque, surrounded by a shaped wooden frame, elaborately painted around the frame with various symbolic figures, scrolls, foliage etc, and also vignettes of scenes from life in wartime, with appropriate captions. The roll of Honour is hand-painted with gothic rubricated capitals. The overall size is approximately 2.5m high x 1.25m wide. Unveiled by Colonel D. Russell RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps) Dec 13th 1919 – Presented to the Club Dec 20th 1919 References * Died in active service M.M. Military Medal DCM Distinguished Conduct Medal Lettered by Miss E. Calvert 1919 By special desire of the members of Carlinghow working men’s Club Initials are in elaborate Gothic script and difficult to decipher. Some initials may therefore have been transcribed incorrectly This work is a unique and outstanding example of ‘folk art’ applied to a War Memorial

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.
