About the memorial: A tall,sculpted rectangular bronze block with figure of Wallenberg in a greatcoat on its front and representation of piles of Schutz-Passes on its rear. There are descriptive texts on the rear of the memorial and on an annulus encircling the base of the sculpture. Sculptor: Philip Jackson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mayfair & Hyde Park Walk: Born near Stockholm Raoul Wallenberg worked for an import-export company owned by a Jewish Hungarian. Travelling frequently to Hungary, he learned Hungarian and become joint owner of the company. In spring 1944 the Germans were deporting thousands of Jews per day from Hungary and Wallenberg was recruited to the Swedish legation in Budapest specifically to organise a rescue program for the Jews. He did this primarily by issuing protective passports, and by renting 32 buildings in which to house the Jews. Bribery was also involved. In early 1945 the Soviet Red Army arrived in Budapest and Wallenberg was detained. Thereafter his fate and date of death are uncertain. This is a good example of a War Memorial that tells a story and entices the observer to move round it by reading the text on its base. Members of the family asked that it be deemed a “monument” as proof of death was never received.The back of the memorial, showing batches of Schutz-Passes, vividly reminds one of the agony of the Jews situation. HE PLACED TENS OF / THOUSANDS UNDER THE PROTECTION OF THE SWEDISH/ CROWN BY ISSUING THEM/ WITH FALSE PASSPORTS./ "SCHUTZ-PASSES", SHELTERING/ THEM IN SAFE HOUSES FROM/ WHICH HE FLEW THE SWEDISH / FLAG. WHEN IN JANUARY 1945, BUDAPEST/ FELL TO THE SOVIET ARMY,/ WALLENBERG WAS TAKEN/ UNDER GUARD TO MOSCOW/ WHERE HE VANISHED INTO THE SOVIET PRISON SYSTEM./ THE LAST RESTING PLACE OF/ THIS SELFLESS HERO IS/ UNKNOWN. PLAQUE, AROUND BASE: THE 20TH CENTURY SPAWNED TWO OF HISTORY'S VILEST TYRANNIES, RAOUL WALLENBERG OUTWITTED THE FIRST BUT WAS SWALLOWED UP BY THE SECOND. HIS TRIUMPH/ OVER NAZI GENOCIDE REMINDS US THAT THE COURAGEOUS AND COMMITTED INDIVIDUAL CAN PREVAIL AGAINST EVEN THE CRUELLEST STATE MACHINE. THE FATE OF THE SIX/ MILLION JEWS HE WAS UNABLE TO RESCUE REMAINS AS ONE OF THE EVILS TO WHICH RACIST IDEAS CAN DRIVE WHOLE NATIONS. FINALLY, HIS IMPRISONMENT REMINDS US NOT / ONLY OF SOVIET BRUTALITY BUT ALSO OF THE IGNORANCE AND INDIFFERENCE WHICH LED THE FREE WORLD TO ABANDON HIM. WE MUST NEVER FORGET THESE LESSONS.
