This memorial commemorates the role played by the airfields of Kent during the Battle of Britain 10th July 1940 - 31st October 1940. Unveiled by the Lord Lieutenant of Kent Allan Willett CMG 19th July 2010. At 12.32 on 19th July 1940 nine Boulton-Paul Defiant aircraft of 141 Squadron, operating from Hawkinge, were scrambled to their first action. Within minutes, six aircrew were lost, together with ten aircrew. This incident was known as 'The Slaughter of the Innocents.'
