Lance Sergeant John Harold RHODES, 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards.Born, Packmoor Staffordshire 17th May 1891. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal on 18th May 1915 with Bar on 6th August 1915. The Victoria Cross on 9th October 1917. Died of wounds at Fontaine, Notre Dame, France on 27th November 1917 The memorial is situated on the Millennium Green, Carr Street, in the village of Packmoor, Staffordshire. John was the husband of Lizzie Rhodes, of 27, New St, Pittshill, and son of Ernest and Sarah of 21 Mellor Street, Packmoor, Staffordshire. He is at rest in Rocquigny-Equancourt British Cemetery, Manancourt, Somme France Citation An extract from 'The London Gazette,' No. 30400, dated 23rd Nov., 1917, records the following:- For most conspicuous bravery when in charge of a Lewis gun section covering the consolidation of the right front company. He accounted for several enemy with his rifle as well as by Lewis gun fire, and, upon seeing three enemy leave a 'pill-box,' he went out singlehanded through our own barrage and hostile machine-gun fire, and effected an entry into the 'pili-box.' He there captured nine enemy including a forward observation officer connected by telephone with his battery. These prisoners he brought back with him, together with valuable information.
