About the memorial: This memorial is listed as a battlefield cross in other sources but I have been unable to locate it in three visits to the church (which is very small). Further research needed. He died in 1919 and is buried in the Churchyard. His burial in the churchyard is recorded by the CWGC. However, the photo seems to show a memorial stone rather than a gravestone. It is strange that there is said to be a battlefield cross as he died in March 1919 and is buried at Alderholt. So he clearly did not die in battle but either of wounds received or of illness such as Spanish Flu. Or perhaps a memorial was made in the form of a battlefield cross. In addition to the DCM medal mentioned on the supposed battlefield cross, he also won the Military Medal as shown on the gravestone.
