Status: On subsequent site(s)
Type: Non freestanding
Location: Internal
Setting: Inside a building - public/private
Description: Roll of Honour or Book of Remembrance
Materials:
  • Other Parchment
Lettering: Other
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
About the memorial: A light green coloured parchment sheet. At the top is the decorative title Roll of Honour in an inverted semi circle surmounting a tableau of battle. The entwined flags of the Allies are in the foreground, and the German flag in the background. The dedicatory and titular scripts are variously in Green, Red and Brown Ink (as indicated in the Inscription section), the names are in black ink. (The apparently brown ink may well be faded red). **The ‘remarks’ column on the ROH was not used, thus this document does not indicate which men died in the war. The inscription showing the closing year of the war as 191 is correct. The figure 8 or 9 was at the end was never inserted. After closure of the shop in the 1980's the ROH was “lost”. During research for a town Roll of Honour by Cleator Moor Town Council it was found, and anonymously presented to the Town Council. It was then deposited for safe keeping with the Library in 2008. It would originally have been framed, and was in a new frame when presented to the Library.
