About the memorial: Addition to the family gravestone. It is on the west side of the cemetery in the 2nd row from the back (north). He was apparently born at Allonby and died on 31 May 1916. He is commemorated at Allonby on WMO/272319, 272320 and 272321, without the middle forename (which was not used in the army either but does appear on his birth certificate and was used on WMO/272321).By 1911 the family were living at Highlaws Farm, Abbey Town (although the farm is just as close to Holme St Cuthbert). When he enlisted on 4 September 1915 he was working at Aspatria Hall Farm. He embarked for France on 10 March 1916 after training and was drowned, off duty. The subsequent court of enquiry found that he was in a working party at Brooke or Brooker Pass (the witness statements vary), when two of the party bathed in a nearby pond during their lunch break (none of the party could swim). His colleague, Private L Wightman, was commended for his attempts at saving his life. He is not commemorated on any memorial at Abbey Town, Aspatria or Holme St Cuthbert. His mother (called Catharine Agnes Mary on the gravestone) was called Kate (nee Latimer) on her marriage certificate in 1885.
