About the memorial: Circular stainless steel plaque set on a wooden backboard in the war memorial chapel- north east corner of the church. This was originally outside his birthplace from 1993 (when it was made by British Steel of Workington.) but was moved into Christ Church in 1996 when it was vandalised. Christ Church was closed in 2013 and it was then moved to St Mary's. There is also a small brass to him on the WW2 Civic Memorial at Netherhall Corner. His middle Christian name is known from the Civic Memorial, and was the maiden name of his mother. There is also a new memorial to him incorporating the government paving stone, harbourside- WMO/260476. Adjacent to the memorial when in Christ Church there is a copy of his CWGC citation along with a photograph, which gives his service number, regiment and place of burial. He enlisted in 1917 and won his DCM for an action on 10 August 1918, when he was also promoted to Sergeant. He won his VC for actions in the 3 days 21 to 23 August 1918. He continued to serve until 1938 in China, Malaya and Ireland and retired in 1938 as a Regimental Sergeant Major. After a year with the Corp of Commissionaires in London he re-enlisted early in WW2, as a Lieutenant. Thus either Lieutenant (his closing rank) or Sergeant (his rank when he won the VC) are appropriate. Details of the incident in which he lost his life have never been made available, but it would appear to have been an incident of “friendly fire”. See WMO/ 294601 for the replacement
