About the memorial: This magnificent memorial chapel with its Book of Remembranmce is to the left as you enter the main door. It is helpful to get a church attendant to show you around and explain such things as the use of marble inserts from around the world. One of the 155 names on the walls is that of Helena Bennett who died while nursing German prisoners at a PoW camp in Oswestry. See the Link for further details. As a strange curiosity, the crime novelist Agatha Christie was married to Professor Max Mallowen in the chapel in 1930. A small encased sloping support on the east wall bears the Roll of Honour. On the wall panels are inscribed names of the 157 St Cuthbert's people who died during the First World War. Only one of those named is a woman. Helena Bennet was a nurse, who died on duty at a camp of German prisoners in Oswestry during an epidemic of influenza. Are the fallen are simply named, no ranks or other details are given. All made the same sacrifice, so all are remembered equally here. The curved apse walls around the communion table are inlaid with beautiful gilt mosaic. The other walls of the chapel are covered with Swedish green marble slab panels. IWM Register has separate entries for the chapel and the book of remembrance but they are treated as a single entry here.
