Plaque: This memorial was once located in Norwich outside the 2nd Air Division/ of the 8th US Army Air Force Memorial Library/ It is dedicated to the 6200 personnel of the 2nd Air Division based in East Anglia/ who gave their lives defending freedom from 1941 to 1943/ The stones are from the 50 States of the Union./ Information board: THE US ARMY AIR FORCE (USAAF)/ SECOND AIR DIVISION (2nd AD)/ MEMORIAL/ The original 2nd AD Memorial, was located in Norwich outside the 2nd AD Memorial Library./ Following the fire in 1994 which partially destroyed the library, Norwich City Council decided/ to develop that site and the memorial structure was demolished./ The Clerk of Works, realizing the significance of the structure, salvaged the tiles you now see on the top/ partial replica. Years later, a member of the museum located these tiles which had bee stored in Dereham. What is in front of you is a partial reconstruction of the original Memorial and it was restored in 2023/ in honour of the approximately 40,000 young Americans who served in East Anglia during WW2./ Although not an official War Memorial, please respect it in honour of those who/ fell during service to their country and ours. Memorial key: Key to the placing and geological structure of stones from the fifty states of/ America in the mosaic. Designed by Mrs Laurel Cooper of St Olave's, Suffolk,/ it formed the floor of an ornamental fountain at the Norwich Library for many/ years. The inscribed stones in the base of this memorial were also part of it.
