About the memorial: The World War 1 memorial is white marble set on black marble. Most lettering is in black, but certain letters are in red. It is surmounted by a cross, and at the base of the memorial are two crossed swords, with 1914 and 1918 above and below the swords respectively. The Modern addition to this memorial is also white marble, with mainly black lettering, but certain letters in red. The World War 2 memorial is brass on a wooden backboard. All three memorials are set together on a large wooden board. There are 240 drilled holes in this board for the placement of poppies. When the memorials were moved to Waverton it was realized that the WW1 memorial had four names less than the existing external memorial at Waverton. An additional memorial (as close as possible in appearance to the original) was thus commissioned to rectify these omissions. At the same time the Churchwarden (Duncan Stuart) produced a leaflet giving full biographical details of all 15 men. This is on the ledge below the memorials. In the course of that research it was determined that Joseph Kirkup had a middle Christian name (Addison)- too late for the new memorial, but included in the book. Ian Muirhead (WW2 casualty) was awarded the DFC and is buried at nearby Abbeytown. One of his three sisters, Winsome, worked at Bletchley Park- like many others she never told her family until the whole existence of that site was made public in 1996. A flowering evergreen shrub (Cassiope Muirhead) is named after her. His grandfather, John Forsyth (1855-1934) was an illustrator. His most famous work is the picture of a dead lion’s carcass surrounded by a swarm of bees on tins of Tate & Lyle syrup and treacle. In so far as memory can determine there were no memorials at the other places of worship in the Parish- the long closed Lee Gate mission or the long closed Lessonhall Methodist Chapel. Moved to Waverton in 2007, The Chapel closed in 1965, became a village hall in 1998 then vacant until sold into private hands in 2007.
