About the memorial: Stained glass window depicting figures from the First World War. Also includes a dedication to Waterloo and the French Wars of 1793-1815. Beneath a rose window, the centre of which is the Lamb of God, a symbol for Christ, are five stained glass panels portraying the Te Deum, one of the Prayer Book Canticles. The central figure of Christ enthroned in glory is surrounded by angels, with the archangels St Michael and St Gabriel in the far left and far right panels respectively. Beneath them are depicted the Martyrs of the Church through the ages - with the three central panels depicting the wartime generation - three soldiers, including a chaplain, on the left, Red Cross nurses tending the wounded, in the centre, and four figures representing the Navy, the Air Force, and the Anzac forces, on the right. Some of these figures have been identified with a number of known people, but this is not stated on the window. A line of Dedication separates these depictions from various coats of arms - Lathom, Liverpool Diocese, Ordnance, and Burscough Priory, with the Seal of Burscough in the centre. Beneath them are inscriptions for the Peninsular War of 1793-1815, and the Mons. The former reference relates to the fact that St John's church is a 'Waterloo Church', having been built with funds voted by Parliament at the close of the Peninsular War for the building of churches in unchurched populous areas of the country.
