About the memorial: Framed copy of his CWGC citation, together with a separately framed narrative of the accident which led to his death, and of the other wartime incidents which affected Skerries (all WW2). The island group of Skerries is a ‘thankful village’, having no lost servicemen in either war. However the incident commemorated by this memorial is one of three WW2 incidents to have affected the island. Halifax R9453 crashed into the sea off Fitful Head, Sumburgh, Shetland mainland on 31 March 1942 The plane had tried to land at Sumburgh but had to abort that due to low cloud. Squadron Leader Burnett was the only body ever to be recovered after being washed up on 30 May 1942, and he was buried at Lerwick at 1430 on 2 June 1942-61 days after the accident. The other crew were Sergeant D C Martin RAF, Flight Sergeant W J Cadger Royal Canadian Air Force, Pilot Officer N F Bowsher Royal Canadian Air Force, Flight Sergeant L W Fletcher Royal Canadian Air Force, Sergeant S Davies RAF & Sergeant L W Henson Royal Australian Air Force. All these other crew are commemorated at Runnymede. The other incidents were on 18 January 1942 when the Lighthouse shore station on the island of Grunay was bombed, with the loss of life from injuries of a civilian- Mary Ann Anderson. Then on 21 February a Blenheim bomber (V5433) flying on one engine while returning from a raid on Norway crash landed on the same island with the loss of all crew. Grunay is now uninhabited and a boat has to be chartered locally to reach the island. At the time of my visit this was a brand new (donated by the family) memorial, so was not yet installed on the wall of the kirk.
