About the memorial: Three stepped base surmounted by plinth shaft and cross. Inscription carved on the side of the plinth. Laurel wreath carved as if hung over the arms of the cross. Designed by Mary Kynaston Watts-Jones (1879-1951), wife of Captain Hector Lloyd Watts-Jones R.N., of 'Canon Hey', Windermere (also unveiled by her October 1920). Two of those named on the memorial, Captain William Higgin-Birkett of Birkett Houses and Lieutenant Joseph Holt of Blackwell, the Arts & Crafts house, are also commemorated by imposing and decorative plaques in the church. That for Holt was created by Harold Stabler. Originally it was higher but some years ago the branch of a tree fell and broke the shaft leaving the restored cross looking rather truncated. Notes: 1. Edward Arthur Kirkbride is buried here, died 22 March 1918 aged 35 2. Louise Holme BEM is buried here, died 19 March 1920 aged 28 3. There are also two WW2 graves: Driver J E Gardner, RASC, died 20 April 1944 and RSM George Gardner, died 10 July 1943 Border Regiment Airborne. J E Gardner is also commemorated on the Cleator Trumpet Terrace memorial-WMO/169507
