About the memorial: Wooden board set within a larger richly carved wooden board. East End of South Wall of Nave. The memorial also includes the two light Shrigley & Hunt stained glass window above it. One light depicts St. George, the other St. Michael. It also includes an oak credence table and a gilt arms dish, donated by Mr Harold Brocklebank of Grizedale Hall. Thomas Geoffrey Brocklebank was a member of that family, of the Cunard shipping line fame. They had a house at the nearby Grizedale Hall, which was used as a POW camp in WW2 (Camp no. 1 in the Red Cross lists). Franz von Werra- the only German POW to make a ‘home run’ was housed here for a time and made an unsuccessful escape attempt. The Hall and camp were demolished in 1957. I suspect the plaque is also by Shrigley & Hunt- the company records would have to be checked at Preston Record Office, which would also reveal the cost. A copy of the window is in Rosslyn Chapel, Penicuik, Scotland. Grizedale was also used by the 'Grizedale Lumberjills' (the Timber Corps, part of the Women's Land Army)- see comment. WMO/151233 also relates to the Lumberjills although unfortunately that key word was not used in the description.
