About the memorial: On River Side of Hospital Grounds on west (or Glasgow) side of Hospital. Polished granite rectangular block, topped by seven pieces of steel in the shape of the hull of a ship.Unveiled 1st October 2011 by Alex Salmond, First Minister of Scotland, and funded by Public Subscription. The Lancastria was sunk by enemy action off Saint Nazaire, France when laden well over capacity with evacuated troops from all three services and many civilians. Although a Civilian liner she was under Military Orders and there was no passenger manifest. However over 4,000 casualties is the accepted best guess, possibly many more. Some sources cite up to 6,000.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.
