About the memorial: After WW2 the Church decided to produce a Book of Remembrance (made of Parchment, not paper) for both Wars, a brass plaque was also purchased in October 1946 from J. Wippell (of Exeter) for the WW2 dead (cost £34/15/-), and a memorial window from the same source- although they probably sub-let that contract. For ease of reference the window has been divided out to WMO/293219 and the plaque to WMO/293220. Furthermore the pews were removed from under the window and an oak pedestal provided with a glazed sloped top for the Book of Remembrance. The Book of Remembrance is now at the relocated United Reformed Church on West Walls, the oak pedestal has been lost, but it is now in a smart new glass topped wooden case in the main body of the Church. There are extensive files at Carlisle Archive Centre relating to the Book of Remembrance and the Plaque- Documents Reference DFCP 3/67, 68 and 71 (researchers may also like to see no. 72) File DFCP 3/67 gives the names of the 29 men who died in WW1, and the 126 who served and returned. I have only recorded for this report those who died as it was only them, it seems, who went in the book. Anyone interested in researching the other 126 can. File DFCP 3/68 gives the names of the 9 men and women who died in WW2, one, it will be noted was a Presbyterian Missionary. The file also gives their service details. File DFCP 3/71 gives the names of the 63 men and women who served and returned. These are forms which were filled in and returned by the people concerned themselves- giving their home addresses directly after the war and details of their theatres of war. As such this is a rare and very useful resource. Also in the file are a few names who were excluded from the Book of Remembrance as their war service was not in the Armed Services eg- Land Army, Fire Service etc. The Book of Remembrance was produced sometime after April 1947 at a cost of £40, the pedestal cost £32/10 and removal of the pews cost £35. It had a Red Leather cover with the gold emblem of the Burning Bush, page 1 had an illustration of the Church with a gold border, and page 2 the dedication and the City Coat of |Arms followed by the names on the inside pages. Finally all the 63 served & returned were presented by the Church with a wallet for the men and a note case for the women. After closure of the Church in 1986 the congregation merged with St. George’s United Reformed Church on Warwick Road (which itself closed in April 2014). The Church was later demolished and the site is now a Car Park. The files were moved to the Archives 4 August 1987 after the 1986 closure of the church due to dry rot.
