Description: Roll of Honour or Book of Remembrance

  • Paper Paper
Lettering: Other
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
About the memorial: Pre-printed card Roll of Honour with lodge details and names added locally, in calligraphy. Certain letters of the dedication and the first letter of each surname and Christian name are in red. At the top are pictures of a soldier and battlefield, a sailor and a warship, and the Oddfellows badge is top centre. Moved to the Archives on closure of the Hall. It does not differentiate those who died- however comparing this to the Wetheral Church Lych Gate (WMO/119507) and the Parish Roll of Honour (WMO/118791) shows that at least Messrs Barnfather and Thomas Bell were casualties. This Roll of Honour can also be accurately dated, to the early days of optimism of a short war, by its dates of the war as 1914-1915. This also means that other lodge members probably joined up later, and so are missing from this memorial. This used to be at Carlisle Archives, but from e-mail correspondence with the Archives on 28 October 2022, the whole Oddfellows Collection (not just the Roll of Honour) has been permanently withdrawn by the Parish Council- so enquirers should contact them direct to view.
