The work to strengthen 4 joints, the four anchors at each end and some of the main structural steelwork was undertaken by Metcalfe Civil Engineering of Penrith as main contractors. Sponsored by the Carlisle Citizens League. The City provided extra money for the foundations of the bridge. The steelwork for the bridge was taken from Skinningrove Iron Works.
