Setting: Inside a building - public/private
Description: Roll of Honour or Book of Remembrance
Materials:
  • Paper Paper
Lettering: Other
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
About the memorial: A pre-printed form (by Fine Arts publishing Co. Ltd, Green St, London, WC1) with names hand written by calligraphy, previously in a wooden frame [removed by Cumbria Archives in 2018]. All borders have leaves, the left hand border also has the shields and the names of the countries of Canada, Ireland, Wales and India. The right border is similar but for Australia, Scotland, New Zealand and Africa. The bottom border has unidentified shields, cannons and drums, while the top border has the title and two warships. The centre of the roll of honour is a facsimile reproduction of the 1831 Treaty (between the UK, Belgium, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, France, Prussia and Russia) guaranteeing the neutrality of Belgium. This is flanked by two columns of names. Certain letters are in red, otherwise the whole is in black ink. The Roll of Honour does not state which of these men died in the service of their country. However reference to the Farlam Memorial (the church for the village, WMO/177238) shows that at least 7 of the 46 made the supreme sacrifice-William Teasdale, Oliver James Bell, Andrew Charters, Harold Little, Joseph Graham, Robert Tailford and James Brough. Document Reference DX693/1. When it was removed from the frame it was deemed to be unfit for production, but a digital image was made, which was provided to me on 4 November 2022. On the original digital copy the names are rather clearer- they have become a bit blurred in the downloading process.
