About the memorial: Brass plaque with etched dedication & names in black. From the inscription, this is definitely a church or chapel memorial, and the names link it to Penrhyndeudraeth itself. The inscription reads: ER COF ANNWYL AM Y RHAI OEDDYN AELODAU O'R EGLWYS HON AC A SYRTHIASANT YN Y RHYFEL MAWR 1914-1918 Which could be roughly translated as, 'In dear memory of those who were members of this church and who fell in the Great War, 1914-1918.' The names are followed by a quotation, 'Trwy ddirgel ffyrdd mae'r uchel Iôr, Yn dwyn Ei waith i ben,' which is the first line of the hymn, 'God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform,' verses written by William Cowper, translated into Welsh by Lewis Edwards. The CWGC database lists Lance Corporal Thomas John Williams (1st/7th Royal Welsh Fusiliers) as the son of the late Thomas and Margaret Williams, of 8, High St., Penrhyndeudraeth. The Cambrian News and Merionethshire Standard of 24 May 1918 reported the death in Italy of Sergeant Robert John Evans of Fairview, Penrhyn, noting that he had been a porter on the Cambrian Railway at Afonwen station before joining the army. He seems to feature in the CWGC database as Private Robert Thomas Evans (1st Bn., Royal Welsh Fusiliers), the son of John D. and Eliza Evans of Penrhyndeudraeth.
