About the memorial: An inscribed anodised aluminium plate with wooden frame on a wooden post on the edge of a spinney on the farm. Erected/unveiled 7 Jul 2004. Although the setting is categorised as 'Roadside' this memorial is away across some stock fields. 1654 HCU Stirling LJ450 UG-F had departed Wigsley for a long-range night NAVEX on 12/04/44 combined with bombing practise on Bassingham Fen range Whilst operating over the range it was intercepted by a Luftwaffe Intruder Me410 captained by Hptm Dietrich Puttfarken (II/KG51) and shot down for his 2nd Abschusse The aircraft crashed at Caythorpe Heath at 0125. Four of the eight-man crew were killed, the others were injured but survived
