About the memorial: Garvagh War Memorial is located on Main Street (B70 road) beside the entrance to the museum. It is a clock tower 40 feet (12.5m) in height. There are three black granite tablets on the sides. The eastern tablet being the 32 names of the officers and men who made the supreme sacrifice. On the tablets on the north and south sides are inscribed the names of the 139 and seven nurses, who served, a total of 178. The clock has four dials each three feet in diameter, which are illuminated at night by electric light. It has two bells which strike the hour. The war memorial is constructed of squared rock-faced local basalt (‘blackstone’) with concrete dressings. It is square in plan (2.75m x 2.75m), approximately 11m high and on a stepped concrete plinth. The second stage of the tower is topped by battlements (squared basalt and concrete copings) with attached metal flagpole to east face. There are roman numeral clock faces in incised concrete surrounds to all four sides and six recessed rectangular louvered openings in a 3- 2-1 arrangement on each elevation. The lower stage has recessed polished stone inscription plaques to three sides engraved with the names of the fallen and doorway containing metal door with slide bolt to west face. The concrete string course between stages is inscribed “For God” (South) “For King” (East) “For Country” (North). The lintel above memorial plaque to east elevation reads, “THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918”. Above the west door the lintel reads “T.A JOHNSTON. ARCHITECT/ TT FLEMING BUILDING CONTRACTOR. GARVAGH/ A.L MANN. CLOCK CONTRACTOR/ J McAFEE, SCULPTOR, COLERAINE The interior of the tower is accessed by the door to the West elevation and higher levels accessed by metal ladders bolted to the walls to each stage. There are 3 levels to the interior: clock mechanism, clock face and bells, with a short ladder and small access hatch to the roof. The roof has a flag pole and one outlet to the SW corner linked to an internal downpipe. A new flag pole has been installed at ground level. Over £3000 was subscribed in Garvagh district for prisoners of war, ambulance, parcels and comfort for officers, and men, Red Cross, etc. Out of this sum the memorial cost nearly £1000. Although there were Reverent Gentlemen on the Platform there is no mention of a Prayer of Dedication being offered.
