Unvailed on Saturday October 5th 1917 by Admiral Walker. 54A Used to be the old Beverley Grammar School. Some of the following information is taken from the Beverley Guardian Newspaper. The dates in brackets refer to the entry date in the paper e.g. (BG 3/5/17). (BG, Saturday 10th March 1917) A whist drive has taken place in aid of the Keldgate Roll of Honour. Mrs Green presents the prizes. (Note:- Mrs Green is the wife of William Green, Proprietor of the Beverley Guardian newspaper. They lived in Keldgate and had four sons named on the Memorial. When the Memorial is installed, it is placed on the wall of their house – number 54 Keldgate. This house was later split into two houses and although the Memorial has not been moved, it is now on number 54A Keldgate.) (BG, Saturday 29th September 1917) “The Roll of Honour of Soldiers from Keldgate consisting of a brass Tablet on which the names are engraved will be unveiled on Saturday afternoon next, October 5th, by Admiral Walker. The Mayor of Beverley will also take part in the ceremony. The number on the Roll is 128. The Tablet will be exhibited in the window of the “Guardian” office next week”. (BG, Saturday 13th October 1917) Beverley Grammar attends the unveiling of the Keldgate Roll of Honour. Names of three House Masters from the Boarding House appear: F. H. Baldwin H. Smith, W. H. Tomlinson. (BG, Saturday 19th October 1918) “Keldgate Roll of Honour. 78 casualties out of 127. As an illustration of the magnificent manner in which the sons of Beverley have gone forth to defend the honour and freedom of their country, we note that out of 127 names on the Keldgate Roll of Honour (unveiled by Admiral Walker in October 1917) there are no less than 78 casualties: of these 25 have made the supreme sacrifice, 42 have been wounded, 4 are Prisoners of War, 2 are missing, 1 has died on service, 3 are or have been suffering from fever, and one is suffering from shell shock. Of the remaining 49 some are serving abroad and some at home.” (Note – casualty rate rises post-19th October so totals are not accurate.)
