Status: On original site
Type: Freestanding
Location: External
Setting: Within a garden/park/churchyard/enclosure/Marketplace
Description: Other monument
Lettering: Incised
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
  • Thankful Village
About the memorial: The memorial is in what was originally the school yard but is now a private Garden. What exists is in the form of a pillar base - 24' square and 30' high, standing on a circular plinth the widest part of which is some 5'6' in diameter. On one side is a shield bearing the inscription (all in caps): 'Erected to commemorate the Victory and in grateful thanks for the safe return of all those men who left the Parish to serve in the great war'. to the lower left of the shield is '1914' and the right '1919'. 4 rusted bolts protrude from the top of the monument as it currently stands. At one point (1930's-40s?) this supported a flagpole. However there are memories in the village that before that an empire lion sat atop the monument but was knocked off and broken by children in the school yard during the 1930's. Its not clear on inspection if the major part of the memorial is stone or finely cast concrete. The plinth is certainly sandstone. Listed Grade II, list entry 1458498.
