Status: On original site
Type: Other
Location: Internal
Setting: Inside a building - public/private
Description: Chapel/church
Lettering: Incised
About the memorial: Small wooden-clad Memorial chapel: Announced by a very ornate altar screen, carved in wood (perhaps oak). The screen is divided into five panels; one wide panel left open at the bottom to form the gateway flanked on left and right by two less wide panels. The central panel has at its top extensive wood carvings in the design of a traceried window, its lines transforming into thorned floral patterns- or carved faces- on its termination. The two sets of panels either side are identical to one another- the upper half of these panels similar in design to the central panel, the lower portion sub divided further into tow sub-panels per panel, each again a blank traceried window with further floral design. Above the panels is a floral, garland-type design creating a pattern repeated all the way along this trim. The rest of the chapel is divided horizontally into two unequal portions- the lower section more wood and more carved floral designs, the upper section is stone, with two stained glass windows. Immediately opposite the altar screen is the altar and right of this a plain, incised list of war-dead. Regiments referenced- Essex Yeomanry, 1st King’s Dragooon Guards. Lieutenant Colonel Edmund Deacon, who served in both, fell at the second battle of Ypres, May 13th, 1915.
