About the memorial: Rectangular landscape-oriented oak panelled memorial, with an ornately carved pelmet beneath which the dedicatory inscription is in raised lettering. The three panels of the main body of the board are divided by carved Gothic arches. The central panel has a relief-carved wreath in which the names of WW1 casualties are in raised lettering; beneath that is the continuation of the inscription in raised letters. The panel on its left has the dates 1939 1945 and the names of WW2 casualties, all painted in gold lettering. It is at the east end of the Church

Alderley and Wilmslow Advertiser 22 October 1922, reported: 'HANDFORTH. HANDFORTH WAR MEMO- RIAL UNVEILED. CEREMONY IN ST. CHAD'S CHURCH. An oak panel placed in St. Chad's Church, Handforth, as a memorial to the men of the parish who lost their lives in the great war was unveiled on Sunday morning in the presence of a large congregation by a former vicar, the Rev. S. Stockton. The panel is of the Gothic period, made of oak with the letters in relief, and gilded on the face. Along the top are the words "In loving memory of the men of Handforth who fell in the Great War, ' and in the centre is a laurel wreath enclosing the names. "Their names live for ever more" is engraved upon a ribbon underneath, while the dates 1914 and 1918 are in a suitable position. The memorial is the work of Mr James Garner, of Manchester. The congregation was fully representative of the civic and private life of the parish. There was an excellent muster of ex-service men, and the members of theCouncil present were Messrs S. Green (chairman). R. Blackwell (vice-chairman), F. Smithson, T. Hope, J. J. Williamson, R. Jackson, Travis and A. Williamson. The remaining member, Mr E. E Harris, was unavoidably absent. Relatives of the fallen were placed in reserved pews. which were also kept for the councillors and the ex-service men. The service was simple but impressive. The choir sang " I heard a voice," and the Rev. S. Stockton, after releasing the flag, said: "We dedicate this memorial to the Glory of God and in memory of the men of Handforth who gave their lives in the defence of the country in the name of the Father, the Son and Holy Ghost.'' Col. E. W. Greg. C.B., read out the names inscribed upon the tablet George Allman, Albert Arrowsmith, John Bailey, Harry Barlow, A. V. Brace, Percy Brooks, Harry Dawson, S. Fernyhough, Harold Gardner, Arthur Goldsborough, Raymond Grimshaw, Frank Helm, Frank Hewitt, James Knowles, Frank Lloyd, John Millin, William Moore, Norman Mottram, William Priestner, Arthur B. Scott, John Shaw, Ernest Thornley. At the conclusion of the service the organist, Mr Snow, played Chopin's Funeral March.'

Unrelated to the actual memorial, but regarding WW1 casualties linked to the parish, is an article in the Cheshire Ancestor-Journal of the Family History Society of Cheshire-Volume 45, Issue 4, June 2015, pages 61-62: The article concerns the WW1 Prisoner of War Camp at Handforth Print Works. In the early days of the war this was a barracks for the Manchester Regiment, but the first German Prisoner of War arrived on 6th November 1914. By the end of the month there were 1500 Prisoners of War there, including 573 from German East Africa. In April 1915 prisoners of the battleship Blucher were there; by the end of the month there were more German inhabitants in Handforth than British. In May 1915 many German civilians living in Britain were interned there for their own safety, before transfer to Bala and Knocklaoe. Four Prisoners of War died in Handforth and were buried at the village church before repatriation to Germany in the 1960's. Many worked on the estate of Adlington Hall.
