About the memorial: In January 1919 Knutsford Urban Council proposed that a Memorial Cottage Hospital be built to commemorate those 'lads who had fallen in the fight'. A Town Meeting was held and the proposal gained the support of the community. A significant parcel of land on which the hospital could be built was given to the Town by Cuthbert Leicester Warren of Tabley. The Memorial Cottage Hospital was completed and opened in 1922. It was built entirely through public subscription. A sum of £17464.14s.5d was raised which covered the building cost of £6274.8s.7d and provided a endowment fund to cover running costs. The Knutsford Hospital Management Board was set up to oversee the running of the hospital which it did until it was taken over by the NHS. The names of the fallen were recorded on a wooden plaque which was positioned on the left hand wall of the entrance hall to the hospital. A second commemorative wooden plaque was installed in the entrance hall to record the names of the fallen in WW2. Within the entrance hall there is also a niche with a Madonna and child either side of which is a cartouche with the lettering 1914 and 1918. A stone plaque on the external wall to the left of the entrance to the building records its 'dedication' as a War Memorial. The architect of the building was the renowned Manchester architect Sir Percy Worthington in collaboration with a second eminent Manchester architect Francis Jones. The hospital provided certain medical services up to 1995 when it was transferred by the NHS to the Red Cross. In May 2016 the Red Cross put the building up for sale.In front of the War Memorial Hospital amongst beds of roses dedicated to the fallen by family members is the Haron Baronian Statue. The Baronian family commissioned William Hamo Thorneycroft RA to create a life sized statue of their son who was killed in action in April 1917 in the Asiatic/Mesopotamia Theatre of War. The statue was constructed at the Albion Art Foundry, Manchester and unveiled in the grounds of the family home Brae Cottage, Legh Road, Knutsford in 1918. It stood there until the family moved away from the town in the 1930's. Then the family arranged for the statue to be sited in a garden at the back of the Lodge of Booth Hall. In 1977 Haron's only surviving sister donated the statue to the town and approved its installation in front of the Knutsford War Memorial Hospital. It is registered on the PMSA list in Region LL as CHMF0001. The statue has now been moved to a site in front of Knutsford Library reference WMO/260385.
