About the memorial: Squat square pillar on two-stepped base, surmounted by and orb and a lantern. Merchant Navy anchor device carved on front face. Names organized by ship on side and rear panels The memorial was erected after WWI to commemorate the officers and men of the Merchant Navy who sailed from Newhaven. It was designed by Mr CT Hooper, the Surveyor for Newhaven Urban Council.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

This memorial is erected to the memory of the Captains, Officers and Seamen of H.M. Transports who lost their lives whilst sailing from this port during the Great War, 1914-1918 and also in commemoration of the valuable services rendered by the Mercantile Marine of the United Kingdom during the War.
