About the memorial: The Ossett War Memorial was designed by Mr H Holmes (Ossett's Borough Surveyor) and Mr C Kendall (an Ossett architect). The life sized bronze figure of a soldier wearing 1902 Pattern Service Dress and 1908 Pattern Webbing was the work of Mr R Lindsay Clark (who died before the unveiling) and was cast by Walkers of Idle. The memorial was originally erected on a traffic island at the east end of Kingsway, adjacent Ossett Town Hall, with the statue facing east. The memorial was unveiled in front of a large crowd on the afternoon of Armistice Sunday, 11 November 1928, by the Right Honourable the Lord Viscount Lascelles KG DSO. On the day of the ceremony a procession took place, followed by the unveiling, a speech by Lord Lascelles and then the singing of hymns accompanied by the Ossett Military Band".
