About the memorial: Just south of Valtos, on the landward (western) side of the road near the Kilt Rock Viewpoint. Situated near the old village school of Valtos which was attended by all those on the memorial. The memorial was erected in front of the old Valtos school in memory of the 7 former pupils who paid the supreme sacrifice in WW1. It was unveiled on the 9 August 1921 by Captain Martin Nicol of Glendale. Its cost of £150 was met by subscriptions from former pupils at home and abroad. It is believed that the school building was demolished and cleared sometime in the 1970s, leaving little or no evidence today, that a school ever existed. The memorial is 11 feet high and consists of a grey polished granite tapering pedestal set on a square base and surmounted by a draped urn sculpture. The memorial has inscriptions of 7 names for WW1 and 1 name for WW2.
