About the memorial: Originally sited at British Xylonite factory, relocated to Suffolk when the factory closed, then returned to Highams Park. Two cast bronze plaques within bronze frames. The First World War plaque is topped by a laurel wreath in relief. Both inscriptions are in gilded capital lettering. There is also an associated note explaining the provenance of the two plaques. This is the memorial for the London factory. There is a separate entry for the Suffolk Factory at Brantham. The British Xylonite (Halex) War Memorial The British Xylonite (Halex) factory was a major feature of life in Highams Park from 1897 until the early 1970s. During both World Wars a number of men answered their country's call and joined the forces. Sadly a number lost their lives. A war memorial was erected in the grounds of the factory to honour their dead. In 1971 the war memorial plaques were taken to another Xylonite factory at Brantham in Suffolk for safe keeping. After a gap of nearly forty years these plaques were returned to Highams Park and unveiled in a ceremony at Hale End Library by the Rt. Hon. Iain Duncan Smith on 25th February 2011 as a permanent memorial to those brave men of The British Xylonite.
