About the memorial: Binghams Melcombe is not a village but a private estate near the village of Melcombe Bingham. Pedestrian access to the church is a 5 minute walk from the gate where you leave your car. The memorial is on the north wall. Lt Smith went down with his ship in 1901 after it broke up in a storm in UK waters so this is a non-combat death but he was on active service at the time.
