About the memorial: Situated on the South wall of the church, a Calvary of a 5ft high Christ on an 8ft high cross, 14th century, originally from a ruined Abbey in northern France. Either side of the cross are Mary the mother of Jesus, and St John. The figures are painted wood. Either side of the cross are two panels, which when closed form a triptych over the cross. The left hand panel is a painting of St Walburga, the right hand panel is a painting of St Ignatius, in armour. When closed, the triptych doors reveal elaborately carved shields on each door, painted. At the bottom of both doors are the words 'Raptim Transit Crux Christi et Claves Petri'. The doors are hung with elaborate brass hinges. Below the cross is the badge of Preston: a blue shield on which sits a white paschal lamb, bearing a flagstaff and pennant. There is a halo around the lamb. The halo and flagstaff are gilded. Underneath the lamb are the letters PP, gilded. Under the shield is a white garland with the words 'Princeps Pacis'. Under the cross and shield are the words 'He Loved Them Unto The End'.Under the cross triptych are hung eight brass panels with the names of the fallen thereon. Above the panels are the words '+ 1914 - Eternal Rest Give Unto Them O Lord: And Let Perpetual Light Shine Upon Them - 1918' All gilded. Under the panels is a carved wooden altar with small carved wooden reredos. The middle panel depicts St George slaying the dragon. The two smaller panels are of carved branches, encircled by gilded crowns. Between the altar table and reredos is carved 'AD + MAJOREM + DEI + GLORIAM'. There are two further brass panels with names of the fallen on, not fixed to the memorial, but still enclosed within the space occupied by the memorial. The whole memorial is enclosed within carved wooden communion rails, with a central gap for the Priest to approach the altar. The whole memorial is within a Grade l listed building.
