About the memorial: Commemorates the names of 620 British, 26 Canadians and an Australian who died in military service in Russia or the Soviet Union during both World Wars. The central panel of the Russia memorial erected 1983 at Brookwood Military Cemetery reads 'In honour of the sailors soldiers and airmen of the forces of the British Commonwealth who died in Russia during two world wars. Their name liveth for evermore'. Those named may have no known grave. Or they may lie in a grave which because of the Cold War and travel restrictions at that time was difficult to visit and maintain. In these unusual circumstances the CWGC accepted dual commemoration. Grave markers therefore exist in cemeteries to which access was once rarely granted and a duplicate inscription is shown on this Memorial. Sergeant Samuel George Pearse VC MM is, for example recorded on the Russia memorial while buried in a marked grave at Souset Cemetery, Archangel, North Russia. On 29 August 1919 in North Russia this Sergeant of the Australian Imperial Force (born in Wales) cut through enemy barbed wire under very heavy machine-gun and rifle fire clearing a way for troops to enter an enemy battery position. He charged a blockhouse harassing the advance and causing casualties and killed the occupants with bombs. He was killed in the action, but ensured the position was carried with few casualties. He was awarded the VC
