About the memorial: Salvaged brass rudder shaped to represent an outline figure of Winston Churchill. Punched lettering states the names of those who lost their lives (some being Italian POW's of Camp 60) during the construction of the Churchill Barriers; barriers constructed to create naval defences to avoid entry into Scapa Flow during WW2 when it was used as the Allied Fleet Naval base. Structure stands on flagstone cairn resting on concrete base. Additional inset stones state date of deaths of workers. The Barriers themselves are a separate memorial record (WMO/289036)- this memorial is specifically for those killed in their construction.
